Why use List Thread Viewer (LTV)?
---------------------------------
Most mail list servers allow you to receive all the days list traffic in one
file (called a digest). While this is convenient when managing your e-mail
inbox; it makes scanning for the message threads you want to read somewhat
cumbersome. LTV allows you to view one or more digest files in thread-order
quickly and easily.
Using LTV
---------
To start, you must load at least one list digest file into LTV; do this by
clicking on the top-most push button on the right side of the window and
selecting the desired digest file from the file dialog box (assuming you
have already saved a list digest file to disk from your e-mail software).
This action loads all thread subject titles from the digest file into the
top list box labelled "Threads"; and loads the first message of the first
thread into the bottom list box. Notice the total number of messages in
each thread is indicated in parentheses after each thread subject title.
Once loaded, you may review the list of threads using the scroll bar on the
right of the thread title box. Double-click on a thread title to view the
first message in that thread.
LTV allows you to use the other push buttons to manage threads and their
messages. Positioning your mouse cursor over a push button will display
that button's function at the bottom of the main window.
Default Options
---------------
The first time you ran LTV you were presented with a window that let you set
the following preferences:
o Title bar text (you may use this to display the name of the list LTV
will be used to view)
o Default file mask for digest file (e.g. "*.DIG" indicates you will be
saving digest files with names that end in ".DIG")
o Whether to prompt for confirmation when deleting a message
o Whether to prompt for confirmation when deleting a thread
These preferences are stored in a file called LTV.PRF within the directory
from which it is run. You may change these preferences by deleting LTV.PRF
and restarting LTV; or, by editing LTV.PRF with any ASCII text editor.
Tips
----
Tip #1: If you subscribe to several lists, you will probably want a way to
manage each lists' threads seperately. You can do this with a
single copy of LTV. The key is to save each list digest file in a
seperate directory and run LTV from the directory where the digest
files are saved.
For example, say you have LTV.EXE in a directory called C:\LTV; and
you subscribe to the OS2-L and OS2-PRO lists...create subdirectories
C:\LTV\OS2L and C:\LTV\OS2PRO to store their digest files. Run LTV
from C:\LTV\OS2L when you want to view OS2-L threads; likewise, run
LTV from C:\LTV\OS2PRO when you want to view OS2-PRO threads. LTV
uses the directory it is run from as it's default directory...that
is where it looks for the preferences file (LTV.PRF) and any digest
files (as specified by the default file mask).
Tip #2: More than one digest file may be loaded into LTV; but they must be
loaded one at a time.
Tip #3: Note that all threads (and their messages) in LTV upon exit will be
retained and available for the next run of LTV. Deleted threads and
messages will not be retained.
